4-H members test their skills

Posted on Thursday, July 22, 2010.

Members of the Haywood County 4-H Livestock Judging and Skillathon participated in the N.C. State 4-H Livestock Judging and Skillathon contest. The senior team of Noah Henson, Keegan Luckey-Smith, and Michala Muse placed fourth in team beef judging.  Individually, Michala Muse placed ninth in sheep judging and fifth in beef judging.  Noah Henson placed 10th individual overall. Lucinda Justice and Connor Luckey-Smith competed as junior individuals. John Eric Francis participated as a non-competitive, because he is under 9 years old. At the state judging contest, teams of three or more juniors or three or more seniors may compete as a team and then

individually.  They are scored on how they placed among four classes of beef cattle, two classes of sheep, two classes of hogs, and two classes of goats.  They answered questions on two of the classes, and the seniors gave oral reasons on four classes; juniors gave oral reasons on two classes.
For the Skillathon Test, they had to identify 30 different breeds of animals, take a written test of over 30 random questions, take a wool identification test, identify 10 cuts of meat, identify 20 tools, and complete a group scenario problem.  All of these tests required extensive knowledge of all four species: beef, sheep, hogs, and goats.
The Haywood County 4-H is grateful to all those who supported the barbecue fundraiser. It was a success, raising more than $1,200.
