Area animal hospitals unite to help Meals on Wheels

Posted on Thursday, July 22, 2010.

Haywood County Meals on Wheels began in 1975, and today serves some 332 meals to elderly, disabled and/or visually impaired persons throughout the county.  Often the individuals who receive their meals from Meals on Wheels will give a portion of their food to their pets.  This not only takes away from the individual, but also is not healthy for the pet. Kim Roberts of The Animal Hospital of Waynesville decided to take on the endeavor of uniting the animal hospitals in the area to help reduce this problem.  The response was excellent, and she has coordinated with four animal hospitals, willing to play a role on a quarterly rotation. The following hospitals

will take donations of pet food from staff, clients, friends, neighbors, all who would like to help, at their hospital during the scheduled time below:
• The Animal Hospital of Waynesville — August, September and October, 91 Depot St., Waynesville; call 456-9575. (one block from the Waynesville Courthouse on Depot Street).
 • Maple Tree Animal Hospital — November, December and January 2011,
1855 Russ Ave., Waynesville; call 452-5211.
• Country Lane Animal Hospital — February, March and April, 2011, 9019 Carolina Blvd., Sylva, 28721; call  627-9100.
• Balsam Road Animal Hospital — May, June and July, 2011, 1628 S. Main St.,  Waynesville; call 452-1868.
Those who would like to participate are asked to drop pet food or monetary donations to the hospital scheduled to take the donations, per the above schedule.
