As Jan. 5 deadline approaches, most haven’t paid county property taxes yet

Property tax notices for an estimated $34.8 million were sent out and due in September, but don’t become delinquent until Jan. 5, 2010. Many residents are waiting closer to the delinquent deadline to pay taxes this year.

Canton Middle School students and staff honored veterans on Monday, while dedicating their new flagpole.

The school had one flagpole for years and it was in poor condition, said Canton Middle School Principal Greg Bailey. 

As Ghost Town in the Sky closes its gates on another season, park officials admit they’ve seen better days. But they haven’t lost hope. 

Services restored for now, but donations needed to continue

A leap of faith has restored all services provided at The Good Samaritan Clinic, but continued operations at the current level depend on the response of churches and others in the community.

The body of a Swain County murder suspect was found hanging in a Haywood County Jail cell Wednesday. She died later that night.
