Geologist says massive slide probably won’t be the last

Those who were around decades ago when the path for Interstate 40 was first carved through the Pigeon River Gorge said they knew then that problems would be coming. They were right. 

The results of Tuesday’s election brought both familiarity and freshness to the Maggie Valley Board of Aldermen.

All four aldermen seats and the mayor’s position were up for grabs this election in Canton, and it was the alderman seats that drew a crowd of candidates. 

With temperatures hovering in the 30s Monday morning, nearly 50 people in need of heating assistance bundled up and waited for several hours outside of Haywood Christian Ministry for help. 

The Clyde man accused of beating a man to death, dumping his body in the Fines Creek area was indicted Tuesday on a charge of first-degree murder.

Rock slides that halt travel between Haywood and Newport, Tenn., have plagued Interstate 40 since it first opened in October 1968. Just four months after the dedication of the route, known early on as the Pigeon River Road, occurred in February1969, when a slide blocked traffic on all four lanes of the route.

A new livestock marketplace in Canton is one step further to becoming a reality. 

More than 10 years ago, 85 percent of women with disabilities were reported to experience domestic abuse. Of both male and females with cognitive disabilities, a staggering 76 percent were reported to have been sexually assaulted in their lifetime.
